Field Notes
Validator commission versus unbonding length
A slightly higher reward can cost you weeks of illiquidity. Compare both columns before you choose.
Validators advertise commission because it is easy to print. Unbonding length sits further down the page, yet it decides how long coins stay stuck after you stop staking.
Build a two-column note
For each candidate validator, write:
- Commission percentage
- Documented unbonding or exit period
- Any recent downtime notes you can verify publicly
Ignore branding. Ignore social follower counts.
When the slower exit wins
If your rent or a planned purchase sits near a possible exit window, a validator with a longer unbond can still be the better fit — provided you enter knowing you will not need those coins early. The mistake is discovering the longer exit after you already need the funds.
When lower commission is not enough
A low commission on a validator with uneven uptime can erase the “saving” through missed rewards. Our Validator Choice Briefing keeps the conversation on these two axes so the choice stays boring and deliberate.
